Writing

Writing will begin with a review of basic sentence structure and building complete sentences, followed by the different parts of a paragraph.  We will study modes, or types, of writing, including: narrative (telling a story); descriptive; expository (non-fiction or explaining something); story writing; and persuasive.  We will use a variety of sources including Write Source, Step Up to Writing, and Six Traits.

Grammar

Each morning students will take part in Daily Language Instruction (DLI).  We do this at the beginning of the day, so it is important your student is on time! On Thursdays, your child will bring home the weekly practice to review for the test on Monday.  An informational letter about the DLI program is attached.

As a part of the DLI curriculum, students will also learn weekly spelling words.  Students will get a list of spelling words each Monday to be tested on Thursday.  There are different groups for spelling.  Green lists have 15 words per test; yellow lists have 10 words per test.  Groups are flexible and are based on the individual student’s progress.  Missed test will not be made up.  Spelling words are not reviewed in class and all preparation is expected to be done at home.  Spelling City is available for online spelling practice.
